Jackal was a Yorkshire band and featured the trio of Geoff Appleby, Paul Sutton, and Gary Burroughs. Their lone single was issued on BASF Records in the UK, and quickly became a staple on Radio Luxembourg. It was also issued in both Spain and Germany with picture sleeves. The A side was written by Pat Ryan and Jackie Taylor, while the B side was written by Paul Sutton. The group would later switch mangement, prompting a move to Newcastle and a name change to Killers.

Make Me Take Me

1976 Single by Geoff Appleby

After the demise of the Hunter-Ronson Band, Geoff Appleby turned his hand to songwriting, and managed to secure a deal with Virgin. He was one of the first singles-only artists on Virgin, and issued two singles in 1976. The tracks were recorded at The Manor, Oxfordshire, with a lineup of Geoff on vocals; Danny Wood on keyboards, guitar and backing vocals; Roy Neave on guitar and backing vocals; Glen Petty on drums; and Robert John 'Mutt' Lange on backing vocals and producing. Despite the fact that Geoff was a bass player, the bass was done on a synthesizer. Promo copies came with a picture sleeve.

Geoff's second Virgin single was also produced by 'Mutt' Lange, and once again features Geoff on vocals; Danny Wood on keyboards, guitar and backing vocals; and Roy Neave on guitar and backing vocals. This time around, however, Trevor Bolder handled the bass chores, and Backstreet Crawler's Tony Braunagel sat in on drums. Albie Donnelly and Bob Robertson from the band Supercharge played saxophone on the record. As with the first single, Geoff wrote all the material himself.

The Rock Roller Coaster

1977 Single by The Buzz

Germany sleeve Germany label

After the lack of success with Virgin, Geoff signed on with Zomba Records, run by friends of Mutt Lange from South Africa. Two singles were eventually issued in Germany under the name Buzz, starting with this one, which was again produced by Mutt Lange. Geoff wrote both songs on the single, which was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales with Geoff on lead vocals, Mutt on backing vocals, and various session musicians.

Mony Mony

1977 Single by The Buzz

Germany sleeve Germany label

The second single by Buzz was a cover of a Tommy James and the Shondells song. Like the first Buzz single, the A side of this disc was recorded at Rockfield with session musicians and produced by Mutt Lange. The flip side, however, is a Geoff Appleby original and features a performance by Geoff's band The Monitors. Geoff refused to allow either of the Buzz singles to be released in England, because they were 'pop' songs and would have conflicted with the punk image of The Monitors. The Monitors did pose for the picture sleeves of both singles, however.

Blind Man

1979 Single by Screen Idols

UK sleeve UK promo label UK stock label

After the demise of his band U-Boat, Spiders From Mars drummer Woody Woodmansey teamed up with Lone Star guitarist Tony Smith to form the Screen Idols, and Geoff Appleby was asked to join them on bass. Geoff suggested Keith 'Ched' Cheeseman, and auditions turned up vocalist Michele Nieddu. The group signed to Cobra Records, a subsidiary of EMI, and recorded the album Premiere. The first single paired two tracks from that album.

Switching to another EMI subsidiary, Parlophone, Screen Idols recorded two new tracks at Manchester Square for their next single. The group chose to cover a Greenaway/Cook standard this time around, with a Tony Smith original on the flip side. This single was self-produced.

Routine

1980 Single by Screen Idols

Screen Idols never really fit in with the current music scene, and were mismatched on tour with bands like Darts. The lack of success doomed the band, and Michele Nieddu eventually left to form Elgin Marbles. Keith Cheeseman also dropped out, leaving the group as a three-piece. The trio issued one final single through the Superstition label before calling it quits. These tracks were self-produced, and recorded at EMI's Manchester Square studios. Both were written by Tony Smith.

Gentleman Jim

1981 Single by The Arctic Raiders

Portugal sleeve Portugal label

Geoff Appleby and Keith 'Ched' Cheeseman formed a band called The Arctic Raiders in 1981, along with Mick Greaves (vocals and guitar) and Brian Chapman (drums). A demo tape recorded at Fairview Studios received interest from EMI, RCA, and CBS, but the band's management neglected to informa the band and tried to secure a deal without their knowledge - and blew all three prospective deals. The group did manage one single released on the independent label Bayleaf Music, which was bootlegged in Portugal with the band's name mis-spelled on the cover. 'Clockwork Boys' was written by Ched Cheeseman, and 'Gentleman Jim' was written by Mike Greaves.
